Lomond Rock progressed to the 4th round of the West of Scotland Cup after a well deserved 2-0 win over ex-scottsh cup winners and Caledonian permier side Viewfield Rovers. Rock looked to bounce back from their scottish cup exit last time out and switched to a new 3-5-2 formation but were dealt a late blow with a call off by keeper Hennerby so outfield player Kevin Graham took his place between the sticks.
Rock started brightly and had a superb chance inside 60 secs when a slack pass back from a nervy Viewfield left back sent G.Quinn clear only for the rock striker to snatch at the chance and shoot weakly into the keepers arms. Hainey was full of energy in the opening stages and the rock attacking mid had two driving runs into the final third of the park that caused the away side problems. Rock were dominating and had a succession of corners and Craig Graham came close to breaking the deadlock with a header over the bar from 10 yards. Rock kept plugging away looking for the opener and it took a few last ditch tackles from the Viewfield backline to deny the Rock. The home side's blistering start inside the first 30mins took its toll and Rock took the foot off the gas as HT approached as they looked for a breather especially as this was the first game in over a month. Viewfield weren't offering much up front as Houston marshalled the Rock backline superbly as they dealt with the odd counter attack from the away aide.
HT Rock 0-0
No changes in the second half for the rock and another chance arrived to go ahead but Quinn effort was saved by the away keeper. The game was now settled into a tense match and Viewfield came into the tie after soaking up all the Rock pressure and the away side then had a great chance to break the deadlock when the no9 latched on to Beaumont mistake and was sent clear only for K.Graham to save smartly and keep the scores level. This let off seemed to give the Rock a shake and they came roaring back with Graham curling an effort round the keepers left hand post and B.Quinn driving from right mid to send a shot wide. Revie then missed a glorious chance for the rock when he lost his marker and with only the keeper to beat he sent his first time lob over the Viewfield bar. Rock management then made a change on 62mins with Campbell replacing a tiring G.Quinn upfront and O'Malley replacing namesake Barry Quinn on the right.
Rock sub campbell then made a quick impact with a hand in the opening goal 8 mins later. 71mins and Rock finally went ahead when Campbell drove inside from the left hand flank and slipped the ball inside and the block by Viewfield fell kindly for Hainey to drive the ball past the keeper from 14 yards to put Rock 1-0 up. Rock then replaced C.Graham with Perucci for his second appearence. Hainey almost made it 2-0 when his volley was tipped round the post on 78mins as Rock looked to finish the tie. The result didnt look in danger now and Rock got the second in the closing stages when Hainey's drive was knocked into his own net by the Viewfield defender as Perucci put pressure on the away defence.
FT Rock 2-0 Viewfield Rovers
Rock now face another big test next Sat 4th rnd tie against Onthank (Ayr) who knocked out local side Denny Ams in the previous round. The game will take place at Merkins Park Bellsmyre 2pm ko.
